Welcome to the home of Katie's Scholarship

Katie was a dedicated and high achieving ENV student enrolled on the University of East Anglia's Year in North America programme (2002-2006).  She died in April 2006 while being treated for Leukaemia and was subsequently awarded a posthumous First Class Honours Degree in Environmental Sciences.

The Katie Wilkinson Research Scholarship has been established as a Registered Charity (No 1117991) in memory of Katie, and as a means to reward outstanding student research. The Scholarship funds are available for UEA undergraduate students completing their final year projects in the School of Environmental Sciences.

In line with the ethos of the scholarship, we hope our funds will enable students to have some fun, maybe an adventure, and who knows, perhaps even the experience of a lifetime!

About The Katie Wilkinson Scholarship
The funds can be used to cover:
  • Travel and subsistence expenses (such as accommodation) for those participating in fieldwork, including an assistant if more than one person is required for the study to be carried out safely.
  • Fieldwork expenses such as equipment hire or insurance.
  • Trustees are willing to consider funding additional items. Please explain in your application how your research may be aided by additional funding.

Application Criteria

The trustees will use the following criteria to assess applications for support:
  • The academic merit of the proposed study
  • The commitment and initiative of the applicant
  • The extent to which undertaking the study will enhance the personal learning and experience of the applicant
  • The wider environmental benefit that could result from the study

Funding

  • Successful applicants will receive 75% of the sum awarded in advance of their fieldwork
  • The remaining 25% will be released upon submission of a brief report (500 – 1,000 words) after completion of the fieldwork.
  • The reports will be added to the Research Scholarship website.
  • Well over £16,000 has been awarded to ENV students so far.  This funding is in addition to the standard support available from ENV.

“I would like to offer my deepest gratitude for The Katie Wilkinson Research Scholarship, as due to the remoteness of the study site, my costs in arriving at the project were substantial and the charities support was invaluable”
Leejiah Dorward, Brazil

" By doing this fieldwork, it made me realise why I love studying Environmental Earth Sciences. I would like to thank the Katie Wilkinson Research Fund for their financial help. I couldn’t have done this trip without those funds. I will now eagerly await to see what I have found from those samples "
